View of Diamond Crater, Oahu, around 1000 years ago. King Kong finch (Chloridops regiskongi) flying past an Oahu palmcreeper (Ciridops sp) perched. Extinct 1892. Directly behind, an O'ahu O'o (Moho apicalis) calls from a flowering Ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) to distant O'o flock (middle left). To the right a Sickle-billed gaper (Aidemedia zanclops), extinct in prehistoric times (below) and O'ahu akialoa (Hemignathus ellisiana) (above) cling to a moss-covered tree trunk. In the distance (top left) a Hawaiian eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla ssp) soaring overhead.
