According to a report published in January 2017, 60% of the world's primate species are threatened with extinction. The IUCN Red Data List shows that a total of 184 primates are either endangered or critically endangered. The main threats to primates are habitat destruction, hunting for bushmeat, and illegal trade. It is vital that awareness of the plight of primates is urgently raised to prevent an extinction crisis, which would be at great cost both to biodiversity and human society.
